Gingham for Ivie

 I'm a new Great-Aunt! My great niece's name is Ivie, and I made her a quilt. Machine pieced, hand quilted.

 

 The 2 1/2-inch strips are raspberry, lemon yellow, and apple green gingham, kona white, and a fruit-and-flowers print. The thin border is a pink-on-pink print.  

 

 

And there's a different pink-on-pink for the backing.  I hand quilted with perl cotton and bound it with more of the green gingham.
I'd tell you the size, but I forgot to measure it and now it's in the mail. I hope Ivie likes her quilt!

City Onesies

Kate and Jed live in New York City, so Beckham's a City Baby.

 

Some friends decorated onesies with ironed-on designs. 

Not wanting to assume his political leanings, he has both elephant and donkey logos...

Here are a few more, all on a variety of sizes.  

 When one of the husbands arrived after the get-together, he said he wanted to make one too. He's a scientist, so came up with the bubbling flask.

 Kate was 4 days overdue, so while we were waiting, we stitched every piece to make sure it was secure.
 It was a fun way to pass the time together. Oh, and the other thing we did was eat cake. Four pieces for the two of us at a cake shop called Lady M. Yes, we ate all four pieces. They asked if we were planning a party or something. We said  "um....no, we just couldn't decide which ones to get, they all looked so good!"

Beckham agreed to pose in the laundry basket with the quilt I made for him. Kate says I can't leave the city without making a label for his quilt. Maybe this afternoon...if I can put him down long enough to sew a few stitches.

My New Grandboy!

I'd like to introduce Beckham Sanders Cowley, born July 2, 2012. He weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces and was 21 inches long. My daughter and her husband couldn't be happier, and I was honored to be present for his birth. I know babies are born every day. Lots of them. An everyday miracle. And this one's mine. I'm his grandma and he's my new grandboy!

A Finish!

I started this quilt as part of a Quilt Along with the group over at Old Red Barn Co. (I just looked at my previous post... back in November 2009! Yes, it was time to finish this!)  It's made from fabric scraps from a stash sale and quilt show our little quilt group hosted, and these florals were the ones that didn't sell. Rejects. Unloved. Unwanted. Headed to the trash. That's why I loved them- fabrics I would never have purchased new, but ones I now wanted to rescue.

I sashed each wonky log cabin in a different shot cotton solid. The resulting blocks are 16x16 inches, and the quilt measures 81x 64 inches.
I asked Terry to long arm it with a large meander to keep it soft and cuddly.

The back is scrappy too. Big hunks of  vintage leftovers.

The same scrappy bits were used for a scrappy binding... 

 I think there are lots of reasons why I love scrappy quilts. There's something so freeing about using up what most people would throw away. And I love to work without a pattern, just sewing strips together, ironing them to look neat, and then squaring the results with a square ruler. I did have to measure the width of the shot cotton strips, and then match the corners as I sewed the blocks together. I like all that freedom within a framework. And trash to treasure (at least treasure to me!) feels like it honors the "make do" tradition of quilting too. I love that.
