Thrifted Grandma's Garden

I love to find treasures at my local Value Village. This is my latest find....

It's a hand pieced quilt top, made from 1 1/2 inch hexes.

Would you look at some of these fabrics!?!?

And I feel like I practically stole this- it was a bargain to begin with, and I got it for half price!

As excited as I am to have found this, I'm always curious about the story of such a treasure being donated by someone. Thank you, unknown quilt top maker. I'll give your quilt a good home.

People Prints

Today I'm taking down our Aussie Animals and putting up our stylized portraits.

I'll have more photos of them soon. I think they're pretty fun! (And quite a change from our earthtone palette of the Aboriginal inspired paintings.)

One Hundred and a Heart for Haiti GiveAway!

This is my 100th post, and so I'm having a give away! I'm making a little wool picture that can be yours!

Here's what you need to do: Make a donation to the relief efforts in Haiti. You decide who to donate to. You decide the amount. But just do it! And then leave a comment here to let me know you've done that*, and you'll be entered in the giveaway. (*I don't need to know the charity or the amount you donated, just that you did!)

I know you want to see the prize, but it's still in the works. But I just couldn't wait to get this going! I'll have a picture of the prize by the weekend! It's wool, it's hearts, it's beaded, it's gonna be cute! (At least I think so!) :D And just in time for Valentine's Day too!!

The drawing will take place on Tuesday, February 2nd.

Thank you for stopping by to visit, and for your generous gifts to those who so desperately need our help. We can all do a little. (And then maybe a little more!)

American Hero Quilts Sew Day

Tuesday was a busy day! Our quilt group hosted a sew day for American Hero Quilts. We made 8 quilt tops, and will have at least two more done by Friday.

A few friends who could not be there made some blocks for us- 9 Patch and various stars. And we had lots of donated fabric too. Thanks everyone!!

We had sewers who brought their machines..

... And the floor was our design "wall".

Rail Fence is an easy layout, but we had the hardest time getting it laid out correctly, as you can see in this photo!

Some friends who don't sew volunteered to iron the whole day!

We kept them simple, with stars mixed in with 9-inch 9Patch and 1-Patch blocks too.
Scrappy all the way!

I didn't get photos of all the quilts or of all of the great women who helped. Some could stay for only a little while, but with everyone helping, we got them done! We had a fun day making these. And the letters from the wounded veterans to American Hero Quilts let us know it was a day well spent.
(But won't it be nice when we don't have to make quilts like this any more... )
Make it a wonderful (and peaceful!) day!

Printed People

Art Club's next project is Printed Portraits. Silly ones.

We talked about the difference between realistic and stylized artwork. And a bit about cubism too. I loved the answers I got when I asked the kids, "What is a print?" One boy explained, "You push a button on your computer and in a few seconds you get a print." Boy, did I feel old....

Working from a sketch to get down their ideas, they drew portrait parts on foam plates and then cut them out. (Many kids these days haven't had much practice with scissors, so we worked on those a bit- rough cutting first, using the throat instead of the tips, safety, direction of the cut, etc.)

They used a dull pencil to add (actually subtract!) texture and details.

We'll print these with acrylic paints in a rainbow of bright colors-just what we need on these dark, gray, winter days!)
